Walk through most seed shops today and the regular section is the shelf at the back: smaller every year, priced cheaper than the feminized packs beside it, and bought by a dwindling number of people who understand exactly what they are looking for. It is easy to see that as the end of a technology. It is closer to the truth to read it as a library losing shelves while the paperback rack next door expands. Every feminized line started as a regular one, each new cross needs a male at some point in its history, and the diversity of cannabis genetics that exists at all survives because someone kept regular seed. Specialists such as https://breederregularseeds.com carry lines going back to the 1980s, sold in packs of 10 seeds since a pack is meant to be a population, not a single plant. This article makes the argument for that unfashionable pack: what the male is for, what a buyer loses by never seeing one, and how to work with a pack instead of a copy.
Not Just Pollen
The lazy account of a male cannabis plant is “a pollen source”, and for a flower grower that is the whole of it. To a breeder it is half the genome of every seed that follows, and that half is chosen with the same attention as the mother.
A male passes on structure, vigour, maturation time, resistance to mould and pests, resin production and the terpene profile just as the female does; it simply shows several of those traits less since it never produce a finished flower. Those who breed with regular seed invest at least as much time choosing males as females, and this is the work that a feminized line inherits and cannot replicate. Feminizing a female yields pollen; it cannot provide a second set of selected traits.
What Happens When Lines Are Only Selfed
Much of the feminized market is made from S1 seeds: a single famous clone, treated and pollinated with itself. Each generation of that selfing cuts in half the surviving genetic diversity, and after two generations what is left is close to one plant repeated across slightly different forms.
This is acceptable for a consumer who wants that one plant. It is a loss for everyone downstream. Hidden weaknesses surface: intersex tendencies, weak stems, susceptibility to a particular mould. Qualities that were present in the parent line but not in the chosen clone vanish out of the gene pool entirely. A decade of such breeding produces a market crowded with variations of the same few plants, and a anyone trying to create something different finds there is nothing remaining to work with. Regular seed from a true outcrossed line is the store that replenishes the market, and it can only exists as long as people keep growing it.
How to Judge a Male
Articles on choosing females are everywhere; advice on picking males is rare, since most growers never keep one long enough to judge. For anyone producing seed, these are the marks breeders watch for.
- Timing. A male that shows sex early and flowers in step with the females is far more useful than a very early one that sheds pollen before any female is receptive.
- Restraint. Males that dump huge quantities of pollen early are often also the least selected genetically; many breeders prefer moderate producers.
- Stability. Any male that at the same time forms female pistils under normal conditions is discarded outright; that tendency is the one thing worth carrying into a line.
- Resin on the stem. Scratch a stem or a flower sac and smell it. A male with trichomes on its flower parts and a strong aroma indicates it holds the terpene genes worth passing on.
- Structure. Tight internodes, a strong main stem and a frame that matches the desired female shape are passed on; a lanky, weak-stemmed male passes that on too.
Thinking in Numbers
A mistake first-time regular-seed growers fall into is seeing a pack as 10 attempts at the same plant. It is the opposite. A pack from a genuine outcrossed line is a slice of a population, and the value of running it is to observe the spread and select from it.
About half the plants will be male, so a pack of 10 seeds yields something like five females to compare and five males to discard or judge for breeding. Among the females, expect noticeable differences: stature, flowering time, aroma, density, tolerance. That spread is not a failure in the seed; it is what the seed is for. The grower who takes cuttings from the best female and male has something a feminized pack can never supply: a line of chosen parents that are theirs.
Three Ways to Cross
Holding selected parents means making the next batch, and there the choices open up. The main approaches account for most of what home breeders do.
- Open pollination. Let each male reach each female. It preserves the full range of the line, makes a large volume of seed, and involves no selection at all. This is how landrace lines are kept going, and it is the right method when the goal is preservation rather than refinement.
- Backcross. Cross a chosen seedling again to one of its original parents to fix a particular quality. It narrows the range fast and is used when a single parent has something worth concentrating and the other contributed mostly vigour.
- Selected cross. One chosen male to one or a few picked females, everything else culled. The seeds inherit the traits of two selected plants and show less variation than the original pack. Repeated over several rounds with consistent choices, this is how a stable line is made.
Each of these need nothing more than a separate space for the male, a paintbrush or a paper bag, and a few weeks. None of them needs the chemical reversal that feminized production does.
Keeping Old Lines Alive
A number of lines have never feminized and probably never will be: landraces gathered from places where cannabis grew for centuries, and old hybrids from the early decades of indoor breeding. They are sold as regular seed since the people keeping them regard diversity as the entire value, and selfing a single clone would erase precisely what makes the line worth keeping.
Growing a landrace from regular seed is a different experience from growing a commercial hybrid. There will be wide variation, long flowering times in tropical lines, tall plants, and qualities that made sense in a field but not in a small room. Expect too aromas and chemistry that no longer exist in the commercial market at all. Breeder Regular Seeds keeps a separate landrace and heirloom section, with each line labelled with its origin of origin and the number of generations it has been grown out since the first collection.
When the Library Is the Wrong Shop
None of the above turns regular seed into the best option for everyone, and pretending that it is would the category no favours.
A grower with space for three plants who needs each one of them to flower is far better off with feminized seed. The same is anyone who cannot afford to inspect the plants every day around the onset of flower, because a late male in a small space ruins the whole crop inside days. Someone growing a single autoflower on a balcony has no use from a pack they cannot select from. And anyone who is after a specific famous cut reproduced as closely as possible is looking for a feminized S1, not a regular cross. Regular seed is for the grower who intends to choose, to hold onto and eventually to produce something new; for everyone else the regular shelf is safely left alone.
Before You Buy
Breeder Regular Seeds dispatches each order in unmarked parcels with the breeder’s packs sealed inside and nothing on the outside to reveal the contents. Orders to the United States are not accepted, as seed importation is not permitted there. Seed law differs widely by country: in many places owning seeds is lawful as collectables while germinating them is not, and in others both are permitted under local rules or both is. Checking the position where you live is the buyer’s responsibility, and no part of this article should be read as legal advice.
